BELLEVUE HILL IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION / HIGHLAND CIVIC ASSOCIATION MEETING

For the first time in their histories, the Bellevue Hill Improvement Association and the Highland Civic Association will hold a joint fall meeting on Monday, October 27, 2008 at 7 p.m. Because of the expanded audience and agenda for the meeting, it will be held at St. George’s Church hall, 55 Emmonsdale Road, West Roxbury.

The meeting will focus on zoning issues within the community, new business and civic developments, and a free yard tree giveaway on Saturday, November 1, 2008 sponsored by Grow Boston Greener and the Boston Parks Department.

Special guests will include Bob Murphy, President of the West Roxbury Historical Society; Olivia Waishek, President of the West Roxbury Civic and Improvement Association; Gretchen Folk, coordinator of Grown Boston Greener; abutters of the controversial 11 Ruskin and 52 Grayfield development projects; and George Kariotis, proprietor of a new restaurant to open in the former Friendly's site on Centre Street later this fall.

Ms. Folk will provide details of the free yard-tree giveaway scheduled for Saturday, November 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. At that time, about 150 trees representing some 15 species, will be given out to interested residents, non-profits and businesses in West Roxbury who have filled out a Tree Site Evaluation Guide, a short questionnaire describing the planting site conditions. Copies of the guide are available online from Gretchen.Folk@cityofboston.gov or from Highland President Gwynne Morgan at Gwynne.Morgan@trimtab.tv or from Bellevue Hill Improvement Association at www.bellevuehillonline.com.

Invited guests include State Senator Marian Walsh, State Representative Mike Rush, Captain James Hassan, Commander, Area E, and Sergeant Ken Jameson and City Councilors John Tobin and John Connolly.

The meeting is open to all residents and business owners in West Roxbury and especially to those who are not currently served by a neighborhood association.

About 150 trees representing 15 species, will be given out to interested residents, non-profits and businesses in West Roxbury who have filled out a Tree Site Evaluation Guide, a short questionnaire describing the planting site conditions. The Grow Boston Greener team will determine a good match between tree and site conditions based on the evaluation guide. Recipients will plant their trees themselves, following instructions from Grown Boston Greener.

Available young trees include small, medium and tall canopies and species, including oaks, maples, black gum, kousa dogwoods, redbuds and pairs of apple trees that must be planted two at a time in order to cross pollinate.
